Located in the north western part of the island, Chilaw aka Halavatha is the first stop of our tour. It is said that the town is famous for three main things, themm being Coconuts, Crabs and Coreas. The latter part of the statement being a subtle tribute to the influence of the Corea generation on the city of Chilaw. Two interesting religious sights to visit would be the Munneswaram Temple and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Caramel. The religious and ethnic diversity of the city is thus increased by the many pilgrims who visit these holy places of worship. The next town on our tour is the city of Puttlam. Famous for salt and fish, the city is a tourist paradise. The Wilpattu National park, Kalpitiya and many beautiful beaches and the Puttlam lagoon are some of the destinations Puttlam has to offer. Puttlam is also one of the largest, if not the largest contributor of salt to the island. The salt factory in Puttlam is one of the places of interest on our tour. The process of sun drying sea water to harvest the salt can be watched in live action at the factory. Various methods of further refining and purification also can be observed. The last and most important stop on our tour is the WIlpattu national forest. Once there, a number of jeeps would be provided depending on the size of your party. Then into the jungle we go. The roads inside are winding and scary at times, but the expert tour guide/ driver would maneuver through the thick jungle roads with ease and grace. Often he would slow down or completely stop to show some interesting bird or beast his keen eyes had spotted. Many tourists go looking for the holy grail of animals at wilpattu, which is the leopard. While there is a large population of leopards, not everyone is lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the bold yellow and black markings. The sloth bear is another very interesting species of animal that many people try to find. There is also quite a diversity of animals and birds in the park. After the tour, it’s back to the hotel.
